Dear Shooby Doobers,
IT'S ALMOST TIME - time to receive the Torah!
HAVE YOU PREPARED your Bikurim (first fruits to bring to the Beit HaMikdash) yet?? Imagine what it must have been like to be at Har Sinai when the Torah was given?? It was such an unbelievable moment in history that we didn't just see the lightning - we heard it! And we didn't just hear the thunder - we saw it! It was even better than being on the best ride at DisneyLand, more exciting than seeing your favorite movie - for the 100th time!!
CAN I TELL YOU a little secret? You were there. Yes - you. Jewish tradition tells us that every single Jewish soul that has ever been born was at Har Sinai. We all heard H-shem speak and those words live inside us of us forever - 'I am H-shem who took you out of Egypt'
SHAVUOT IS THE DAY we celebrate the biggest, most precious gift that has ever been given. Yet, we learn, no else wanted it! Can you believe that? H-shem offered this most beautiful gift – the Torah - to all the nations. But not one of them wanted it - except us, the Jews. We saw that each mitzvah is a sparkling gem, we heard the mitzva of “Ve'ahavta Lerei'acha Kamocha,” “always do to others as you'd like them to do to you”, we listened to the mitzva of having good middot, and we wanted it- wanted all of it. We said to H-shem: “Na'aseh v’nishma,” “We will do and then we will understand!” That is why H-shem says – “Mi K'amcha Yisrael” - who is like my people Israel?? On that day - we showed just how much we love H-shem and how much we want to be close to Him by doing His mitzvot.
WHEN WE GOT THE TORAH on Shavuot 3320 years ago, in the Hebrew year 2448, the world changed forever. We now had a duty to bring light into the world - the purest light of all - the light of H-shem. Did you know that we have a very big responsibility? Making H-shem's light shine is no easy task. But He still chose to give us the Torah – to me and to you – because He knows we can do it. He knows we can be a Kiddush H-shem (a sanctification of His name), make Him proud, and through all the mitzvot we do, we can bring Moshiach.
You matter. You make a difference. You are a miracle.
